This group is for anyone who enjoys writing prose, poetry or both! The emphasis is very much on enjoyment; both the act of writing itself and listening to the creations of others. Members' writing can be for any purpose: for friends and family, even with a view to publication - but mainly just for personal satisfaction.
The aim is to provide mutual support and encouragement, without negative criticism. We recognise that it can be intimidating to read something you have written out to an audience of other writers, so we try to avoid any sense that there are any ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ ways to write a piece of work. One of the few ‘rules’ is that feedback should always be constructive and friendly - and it doesn’t matter if spelling or grammar isn’t perfect, or infinitives are split; the creativity is the important thing!
At the end of each meeting, we have an assignment to complete within the coming week which ideally will be no more than 500 words or a side of A4 in length. A subject is chosen and agreed by the group; but members are free to write about something else if they wish - or even just submit a favourite piece by someone else that they think the group will enjoy. Both fictional or non-fictional subjects are welcome, in any genre that members choose, from the comic, to the dark and mysterious! It is always fascinating to hear the range of different interpretations of each subject that result when members read their work out at the following week’s meeting.
We have a wide range of age and background experiences in the group, which often result in unexpected, interesting and quite often hilarious pieces of local or family history.
