Everyday Philosophy is a group for people interested in Philosophy. It was started some years ago and this present iteration is just the latest of many. We aim to talk about:
Philosophers
Philosophers are people from all times, the world over to the present day and no doubt beyond who have shared their ideas in various ways. Definitions are sometimes imprecise and sometimes there is argument over their exact labelling. This may or may not matter as philosophically speaking we rarely deal in absolutes.
Philosophies
Philosophies are often what might come from and follow earlier thoughts from previous philosophers and traditions.
While a philosopher is alive there can always be changes, additions, developments or evolution of such Philosophies. We can therefore only really think of ‘Philosophies’ as a ‘thing’ posthumously. Living Philosophers are continually developing ways of thinking about things and often talk on topics as they are thinking about them in the ‘here and now.’ I think that this is usefully thought about as Philosophising.
Philosophising
Describes a way or ways of thinking, more akin to ‘considering’ or ‘wondering’ about things. This in turn allows ‘free’ thinking and does not look toward ‘setting things down.’ or finding absolutes or ‘Truth.’
Maybe this feels familiar because it is what most of us do from time to time when we say we ‘think’ about things. If we were to develop such thoughts we might be said to be Philosophising in an every day kind of way.
Hence ‘Everyday Philosophy.’
We oft-times talk of having fun as we discuss issues. Fun can also be had in taking something seriously, which is always kept in mind.
